Zinc plating

General

Zinc plating is the best used plating process which is applied to prevent the metal works from corrosion damage.

Since zinc potential is more negative against iron one, when contacting each other under humidity conditions a galvanic element is formed where iron serves as cathode.

Thus, zinc coating prevents steel not only mechanically but also electrochemically and if zinc coating should be damaged at small area, iron shall not be exposed to corrosion. Zinc is a corrosion-resistant material under ambient conditions.

Zinc plating is used not only to be applied on the ready-made items but also on the steel sheets and strap. Zinc coating is often used to protect the water pipes and replacement tanks from corrosion. If in soft water, zinc coating protects steel worse if compared with hard water. In hot still water (over 70°С) zinc coating does not provide with safe protection of steel against corrosion since in these conditions zinc protects steel only mechanically. Also, zinc coating prevents the steel items from corrosion affect of petrol and sulfur-content liquids. At this, zinc coating is much more efficient against cadmium or lead.

Nowadays the zinc plating electrolytes applied in the industry is to be divided by the simple acid electrolytes: sulfuric, muriatic and hydrofluoboric solutions where zinc is present as hydrated ions and by complex electrolytes where both metals are present as the negative (anions) or positive (cations) ions.

The complex electrolytes include alkalicyanide, ammine, pyrophosphate and others. If speaking about the simple electrolytes these are sulfuric ones are the most common against hydrofluoboric one which are used less. These electrolytes are featured by low diffusion properties therefore they are used mainly for zinc plating of the items of simple geometry. The admissible cathode current density and metal power yield is higher for the acid electrolyte against the complex ones. Consequently, the process speed is also higher.

Simple acid electrolytes are used more frequently together with the organic matter additives since they increase cathode polarization and improve the deposition structure. Besides, the brightness-forming substances are often added to acid electrolytes. Hydrofluoboric electrolytes might be applied at higher level of current density against the acid ones. They are used to perform continuous process of wire and strap zinc plating. High surge capacity of hydrofluoboric electrolytes is one of the reasons of increased admissible level of current density.

Zinc plating followed by passivation treatment of the other colors is available by request.
